Gun Hunting in my home state of Wisconsin starts Saturday before Thanksgiving, all the motels are booked, vacations are put in for, spouses are left behind, just to hunt deer on the Gun Hunting Opener.

We used to hunt locally around home in small woodlots. Then my friends and I decided to expand our horizons, we headed to northern Wisconsin to the large unbroken tracts of forests to hunt large Whitetail deer with heavy center fire rifles. That was in 1984 and ever since then we have been Gun Hunting deer in the big woods up north.

There are acres and acres of public land to hunt on. I’m the kind of guy that likes to see what’s over the next ridge, so I like it that you don’t have to worry about walking on someone’s land.

I have found that if you hunt one area long enough you can figure out the deer’s travel habits; where they go when pressured where they go to eat and where they go to bed.

After hunting the same general area for a while my father and I kept moving a little each year and we almost always had some luck getting our deer. I like to find the thickest spots and watch the travel route where there are groups of other hunters. They almost always push the deer into the thick spots that I am watching.

After things have cooled down after opening day, in the thicker areas the deer will feel secure enough to move about during the day.

To hunt these thicker areas I like to use a ladder stand, so I can get above the brush for a clear shot. If you are hunting public or state land check the regulations about tree stands.

In Wisconsin you must remove your tree stand from the woods after you are done hunting for the evening.

To make my ladder stand more mobile, I welded a flat piece of steel on each side of the stand where the bend where the platform meets the ladder. I then drilled a hole through each piece, I use two 6” lawn mower wheels and a threaded rod for an axle. I can then pull the stand behind me on the wheels to get my ladder stand in and out of the woods. It also works as a deer cart to carry my deer back to the truck.

After bow hunting all fall, where you have to get deer within 40 yards, hunting with the rifle seems so easy, if I can see the deer it’s in range. I can’t wait till November to go Gun Hunting again.
