Traditional Archery
Traditional Archery still has its place in today’s bowhunting world.
The beautifully crafted recurves and long bows are still being made and made better then ever.

Some new recurves and long bows are made with hardwood laminates and fiberglass backing, some have solid glass limbs, and some have aluminum risers.
The traditional archer has many choices with arrows. The hardcore traditional archers like the cedar wood arrows. Many of them including myself have switched to the new carbon arrows. They are stronger and more forgiving then the wood and aluminum arrows. The choice is up to you. Most traditional archers shoot off the shelf of their bows as well. You must use feathers on your arrows then. Plastic vanes will push away from the shelf and will not be as accurate.
You can expect to pay from $300 to $600 for factory model bows and much more for custom built bows. Up to $1000 or more. Much more then a lot of new compound bows, but there is more time and hands-on work done with these bows.

It takes a special bowhunter to hunt with a primitive weapon knowing that there are bows out there that are much faster and more accurate.
The stick bow hunter has to get closer to the deer then the average hunter; they must draw their bow at just the right moment because they won’t be able to hold the string back for a long time.
The stick bow hunter challenges are great but the rewards are greater!! A lot of archers find themselves going back to traditional archery after they have taken many game animals with their compound bows to give themselves a greater challenge.
I have used a recurve bow since I was 10 years old and just enjoy shooting this type of bow. If you want to get back to the roots of bowhunting consider trying the recurves and longbows. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it!! I know I take great pride in the fact that I was able to harvest my first Pope and Young whitetail this past fall with my recurve at a distances of 10 yards. Quite the thrill!! I hope you consider giving it a try sometime.
